Uganda Turns up the Adventure

From the rapids of the Nile to mountain trails and an 800-kilometer cycling challenge, Uganda offers travelers plenty of ways to experience its landscapes beyond the traditional safari.

Adventure in Uganda can mean getting wet, going high or simply choosing two wheels over four. In Jinja, at the source of the Nile, travelers can tackle white-water rapids, kayak the river or take the plunge with a bungee jump above the water. For a slower pace, water cycling offers another way to explore the Nile.

On land, Uganda’s varied terrain opens up further possibilities. Mountain bikers can ride through the landscapes around Mount Elgon or Lake Mburo National Park, while hikers can take on the Rwenzori Mountains, including Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters, or explore the trails around Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla national parks adds wildlife to the adventure mix.

This November, cycling takes center stage with the inaugural Race the Nile Uganda Ultra. Running from November 23 to 27, the self-supported gravel challenge will cover around 800 kilometers across the West Nile region, starting and finishing in Arua and passing through all 13 districts. Around 97% of the route is expected to be on gravel.

The event is also intended to introduce international visitors to a lesser-explored part of Uganda, combining sport with landscapes, local communities, culture and tourism along the route.
