Barcelona Medical Destination brings top level medical tourism experts to WTE Miami 2024
On the second day of this year’s WTE Miami, Barcelona Medical Destination took center stage, unveiling its comprehensive initiative aimed at promoting medical tourism in Barcelona and Catalonia more widely. The session brought together key stakeholders, including the Catalan Tourist Board and renowned medical institutions such as Barnaclinic, Quirónsalud, IMO Grupo Miranza, IMOR Atrys/Clínica Servidigest, and Fundació Puigvert.
Barcelona has long been recognized for its high-quality healthcare system, which consistently attracts thousands of international patients seeking advanced medical treatments. The region’s healthcare facilities are praised for their cutting-edge technology, highly skilled professionals, and wide array of specialties, positioning Catalonia as one of the premier medical tourism destinations in the world. According to independent experts and the World Health Organization, Catalonia’s health system ranks among the best globally, making it a sought-after location for medical travelers.
Esther Orriols, Brand Manager for Catalonia Premium at the Catalan Tourist Board, emphasized the unique combination of medical and cultural experiences available in the region. “Catalonia is one of the top 10 medical tourism destinations thanks to our first-class healthcare services, competitive pricing, and the rich cultural backdrop,” she stated. “Patients come for advanced treatments in areas like orthopedics and oncology, but they leave with memories of our vibrant history, stunning landscapes, and exquisite cuisine.”
The international appeal of Barcelona’s medical offerings was underscored by Mario Garcia Guillen from IMO Grupo Miranza. “We serve patients from over 85 countries, providing exceptional care tailored to their needs,” he said. “Our commitment to quality is reflected in our adherence to rigorous clinical protocols, ensuring safety and satisfaction.”
Anna Codina, representing Fundació Puigvert, highlighted the institution’s commitment to excellence in specialized care. “With over 60 years of experience, we are pioneers in neurology, nephrology, and urology,” she noted. “Our success rates are outstanding—99% in complex surgeries and a 98% survival rate for kidney transplants. We prioritize patient comfort, offering comprehensive services that cater to international visitors.”
Carlos Seguí, Regional Business Development Director at Quirónsalud, provided insight into the scale of their operations. “We are the leading hospital group in Spain and, following a merger with the German company Fresenius-Helios, we are the largest hospital group in Europe. We manage over 58 hospitals in Spain, conducting nearly 500,000 surgeries annually,” he explained. “Our facilities are equipped with advanced technology. Our Teknon Hospital has served as an official medical reference hospital for prestigious events like this year’s America’s Cup.”
With its fusion of top-tier medical services and rich cultural offerings, Barcelona is not just a destination for healthcare—it’s a comprehensive experience that promises world-class treatment alongside the allure of one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. As medical tourism continues to grow, Barcelona is well-positioned to attract patients seeking both health and adventure.
