Miami International Airport drives jobs, trade, and tourism to new heights

As host of WTE Miami 2025, MIA showcases its record $181.4 billion economic impact and its role in making Miami a hub for air, sea, and commerce.

Miami International Airport (MIA) has set a new benchmark as one of Florida’s most powerful economic engines, generating $181.4 billion in statewide business revenue and supporting 842,703 jobs, according to its 2024 economic impact study by Martin Associates, released in July.

In Miami-Dade County alone, MIA contributed $41.2 billion in revenue and sustained one in four local jobs. Passenger traffic surged 7% in 2024 to nearly 56 million, while cargo volumes rose 9% to three million tons, both all-time highs. The growth cemented MIA’s status as the busiest U.S. airport for international freight and second for international passengers.

MIA’s impact extends to the wider tourism sector. The study revealed that 766,662 travelers arrived at MIA in 2024 specifically to take a cruise, accounting for 9.3% of PortMiami’s record 8.2 million passengers. This underscores the airport’s vital role in fueling the region’s cruise industry and reinforcing Miami’s status as a global tourism hub.

With its $9 billion “Modernization in Action” program underway, MIA is preparing for the future with projects like the Ibis Garage and Concourse K expansion. These upgrades aim to meet growing demand, enhance the passenger experience, and strengthen MIA’s position as a cornerstone of Florida’s economy.
